Bone witches like Tea are feared and looked down upon by people across the kingdoms, yet they also stand in a balance because of their necessity in helping combat the daeva. It consists of multiple kingdoms plagued by monsters called daeva. The world of The Bone Witch is also very complex-enough so that it is confusing at first, though the confusion is, in my opinion, worth it. Throughout the book, Tea develops strong bonds with the other characters, including her resurrected brother, which I thought were major positive aspects of the book. The book begins with an exciting start (Tea accidentally resurrecting her brother from the dead) and continues with that excitement throughout, though it does have a few lulls and slower parts. As a reader, it was fascinating to watch as the timelines converged and Tea’s character developed as she headed toward becoming the person in the present perspective. The timelines start off far enough apart from each other that it invites curiosity as to what events occurred between them. The story is written from two perspectives: one is the story’s present, telling of an exiled asha (which is the book’s name for a trained magic-wielder) named Tea the other is the story’s past, told from Tea’s perspective and detailing how she came to be who she is in the present.

If you’re looking for an eloquently-written, necromancy-filled story that has growth, struggle, and vengeance, this is one place to find it. Like the description says, The Bone Witch is both dark and lyrical.
